The first WC was played in Karlsruhe, Germany under the tournament name of the Minigolf World Games and it wasn’t until the next edition, in 1991 in Oslo, Norway, that the competition officially became known as the Minigolf World Championships. In fact the World Championships actually follows in the footsteps of the European Championships in terms of being one of the most important bi-annual minigolf tournaments. While the WC only goes back to 1989, the European Championships has a rich history going all the way back to 1959. As a matter of fact the first EC actually took place in Italy (1959) and was played again in the country in the years 1963, 1968, 1972, 1973, 1977 and 1985. However 20 years have passed since a major minigolf competition has been played in Italy, but now 2007 marks the year that the WC will be played out on Italian soil for the first time in its short history. This year the Italians are not only hosting this competition, they are also hoping that their home advantage will help them conquer one of the top 3 positions in either the singles or team tournaments, positions they have yet to win and ones which usually go to the Germans, Austrians, Swiss or Swedish. What’s more, being a “world” competition, it would be nice to see some non-European teams add their names to the World Championships Hall of Fame.
