"The Nations Cup minigolf tournament is about to trigger an unique experience that is not only about sport: the collaborations between public governments and private organizations have also taken up the cause and donated funds to a sport discipline that is looking for a bit of recognition". These words of Gianbattista Fratus, sport alderman for the township of Legnano, were much appreciated during the press conference for the presentation of the Nations Cup minigolf competition, a sort of appetizer to the World Championships scheduled for August. Coming together for the first half of the most important competition in the world of minigolf include: two townships (Canegrate and Legnano), a Province (Milan), the Regione Lombardia, the minister of Sport and youth policy, private organizations of the area.
The Nations Cup officially kicks off Thursday at 19.30 with the opening ceremony at Relax Time Minigolf. Friday will bring the official training, and Saturday and Sunday will play host to the tournament that will bring 10 European nations together to compete for the cup. Over a 100 professional minigolf players hailing from all over Europe can be found on the courses of Relax Time from the 24th to the 27th of May. Among these, one of the most talented players can be seen in "full swing": the German Walter Helbruck, with his many national, European and international wins to back up his reputation as one of the world's best players.
The press conference presenting the event took place this morning at Relax Time Minigolf in Canegrate, the official location of the two competitions. In attendance, other than Fratus, was his "colleague" from Canegrate, Roberto Meraviglia, the president of the Italian Minigolf Federation (FIGSP), Giuliano Banfi, the vice-president of Accam Spa, Luciano Cremonesi, and the president of Ianomi, Roberto Colombo. "These two important events in the world of minigolf are, for us Italians -explains the FIGSP president-, a starting point. 2007 will not only show but will show that we have an incredible chance and will play with all we've got".
"Canegrate is proud to have the opportunity to host these events -says sport alderman, Roberto Meraviglia-. Having beat-out England and Japan for the honour of hosting the Nations Cup and World Championships has already been an incredible achievement. Now, the city will be able to demonstrate its passion and love for the sport?". The favourites for the final victory: Sweden, Germany, Switzerland and Italy, with its home-field advantage.
