| Rudi Giroldini during the first meeting of the Italian team in Canegrate |
His name is Rudi Giroldini, he is 34 years old and currently he is one of the best italian minigolf players. Minigolf isn’t just a pastime for Giroldini, but a way of life. He took up the sport in 1986 and has already accumulated many victories: most importantly he was the master champion, placing first in the national rankings. However in 2007 he will attempt to add the most important award to his curriculum: the title of world champion. He has already been a finalist in the World Championships two times, placing thirteenth in the competition held in 2005 in Steyr, Austria, as well as of that held in Bamberg, Germany in 2003. You can bet that in August of next year he will use everything he’s got to beat these previous results. On his part, there are many different elements going in his favour. For starters,
the Italian national team has never been more fierce or prepared as they are now, but more importantly, for the first time in history, they have the home advantage.
Giroldino was summoned, together with the best players in Italy, to the courses in Canegrate (Milan), the same playing field which will host the most important competitions in the discipline: the Nations Cup, from 24th to 27th of May, and the World Championships, from the 17th to the 25th of August.
«I like everything about the game –explains the champion-. You need to have great technique abilities to know how to evaluate every pitch, however calm nerves are also necessary in order to maintain concentration». Giroldini, who works as a professional bartender when not playing minigolf, first picked up the putter in 1986 out of curiosity,
but little else was needed for this sport to become a passion for him. «I started off in the Juniors category and participated in all the important tournaments of this discipline. I devote all the free time and vacations I have to minigolf». On the courses Rudi’s fortitude is something to see, however his playing “recipe” is easy: «When I play – says Rudi- I play with much determination, willpower and the desire to win». Giroldini grew up professionally in the GSP Club in Vergiate, a club that plays host to many of the most talented players in the country. According to the two coaches of the Italian national team, the German Thomas Ruff and the Swiss Jean Louis Cazzato, Giroldini is one of the best players on the team: «Rudi has a real talent for the game and next year he will surely astonish us».
