«To be a top player you need to have a lot of different skills, for example knowledge about balls and lanes, a strong mind to handle difficult situations, calmness and patience- describes Swedish Anders Olsson-. The best players can perform great golf on all surfaces». One of the top minigolf players on the Swedish National Team, Olsson, born in 1979, possesses all these qualities. He may be young in age, but he has already racked-up quite a long list of wins and this year is determined to add another victory to his register; the most important of all minigolf competitions, the World Championships. Olsson is not modest about it, he knows he has all the characteristics to achieve first place and will do what it takes to accomplish this goal: «I hope to bring home the gold- he affirms-. I won’t be satisfied until I have my own WC title, meanwhile having fun while competing for it».
Olsson owes his start in the world of competitive minigolf by having a course
located close to his childhood home. Reigning from just outside Stockholm, eleven year-old Olsson and friends would pass many summer days at the course back in 2000, «it was great fun to play with friends from morning to late night all summer long» recounts the Swede. His early fascination with minigolf has carried over into adulthood because besides playing for the national team he is lucky enough to be able to fine-tune his minigolf skills even while at work when time allows, as he is a manager at a minigolf course by profession.
Years of hard work and practice earned Olsson a position on the national team. Part of the Swedish National Team, junior league from 1994 to 1997 then after a few years break from minigolf Olsson joined up with the team’s mens league in 2002. His results in tournaments speak for themselves and prove that he has what it takes to be a great minigolf player. While competing in a tournament in Gallarate, Italy the young Anders
came in first for the individual junior category in the 1994 European Championships and in both 1994 and 1995 Olsson and his team-mates beat out every other team to take the gold. Even after his brief break Olsson managed to achieve top scores in the mens category of the Swedish National Team placing first at the 2003 World Championships and again beating out everybody in the 2003, 2004 and 2006 European Championships to take the gold for team play. The years 2001, 2005 and 2006 all saw Olsson placing a neat second in the Eurocup individual category. Olsson’s achievements are further verified in his results for his personal best rounds, in miniature he has scored a perfect 18 in one round and 37 in two rounds, 20 and 46 for minigolf and in felt golf his top scores are 21 in one round and 44 in two. Olsson will be in Canegrate this August for the World Championships and will surly be one of the top contenders of this much anticipated competition.
