| Castle San Giorgio |
 |
This XIII century castle located in Legnano was once owned by the Torriani and Visconti families and will be the location of the opening ceremonies of the Minigolf World Championships; which will take place between the castle’s park and Piazza I Maggio.
|
It became property of the Township of Legnano in the 1970’s and was first opened to the public in May 2005, however there are still restoration works in progress.
The castle provides a magnificent set for all events related to the famous Palio of Legnano, and its rooms give hospitality to the College of Captains and the town’s various quarters (for the Palio) and to civic meetings.
The manor is surrounded by a ditch and the entrance is located in a central tower. On the right can be seen the small church of San Giorgio.
Upon entering the courtyard you will see a glass cover on the right side, which may be used as the future location of the triptych of Gaetano Previati, inspired by the battle of Legnano. Presently the triptych is kept in the civic museum “Sutermeister”.
Also on the right are housed the rooms used for various events of the Palio and civic meetings. The area inside the walls is a typical courtyard of Lombardy with a central flower bed.
On the left there is a large portico that had once been the ice-house.
The back of the castle consists of a large open space that was once used as a garden and nowadays is the location of various shows and concerts.
