An area with a population density slightly inferior to the provincial data (1095 verus 1391 inhabitents/km2) Altomilanese reveals, at its core, non homogeneous values: with the highest population in Legnano (2110 inhabitents/km2) and the lowest in Castano Primo (548 inhabitents/km2). Therefore, there is an alternation between the density of inhabited zones and the still green areas, which vary between strips of high dry plains, wetlands and river valleys, and have long since been protected by the institution of parks. These still green areas don’t simply wish to be reserves of flora and fauna to admire, but environments with their own biological cycle. Moreover, thru the years Lombardo Valle del Ticino Park was born (limited to Altomilanese, including the towns of Vanzaghello, Nosate, Castano Primo, Buscate, Turbigo, Robecchetto con Induno, Cuggiono and Bernate Ticino), recognized in 2002 by Unesco as a biosphere reserve; Altomilanese Park (the local park between the towns of Legnano, Busto Arsizio and Castellanza); Roccolo Park (the local park between the towns of Canegrate, Parabiago. Nerviano, Casorezzo, Arluno and Busto Garolfo). In addition two parks will be established: Mulini Park (Legnano, San Vittore Olona, Canegrate, Parabiago and Nerviano) and Roggie Park (Magnago, Arconate and Dairago).
The most important water flows of the area are the Ticino and Olona rivers, as well as the Volloresi canal which brings the water of the Ticino in the northern part of the province of Milan up to Adda with the purpose to irrigate the land
